The following is an account of the visit that Rima (a sponsor from our parish) had with her "adopted child" in Lebanon during the summer of 2002. We thank Rima for sharing this special experience with us.
I feel honored but a bit nervous to talk about my meeting with Cynthia and her family because I am not sure if I will be able to choose the right words to describe my genuine feelings and the blessed visit to Cynthia's house... I met with the social worker in July, and we both headed to an apartment where a mother who lost her husband during the war lived with her two young daughters. The social worker advised me that the house we were about to visit might look nice and well furnished but it was a temporary place offered by the landlord. Cynthia's mother and I greeted each other with a hug and three kisses (a la Lebanese) I felt welcomed and overwhelmed by her generosity...She started preparing hand made juice while telling us about her job... she works as a cleaning lady at a convent to improve her daughters' lives. It was obvious that she was leading a tough life. She looked tired but kept her greeting smile.... I was also told by the social worker that Cynthia had a mental delay. During the first couple of minutes, Cynthia was quiet but observant, a typical behavior for a child. I asked her about her school to brake the ice between us so she smiled and brought a folder with math, writing and drawing papers and started telling me how she likes her new school (a specialized school for her condition) she is a talkative and a pleasant child to be around! My visit was brief but very fruitful especially that I noticed that the family relies on God to go on with their life... Before I left, the mother offered me the best and the most precious gift that one can give, a framed picture of Sainte Therese that I keep in my bedroom and that reminds me of a special family in Lebanon... we finally said good bye with a promise to keep each other in our prayers
I felt touched by this visit because I left the house with many blessings, and a high spirit, a feeling that only the children of God can offer on earth.
